How to make milk lotion.

Milk in lotion is naturally nourishing, moisturizing, and rejuvenating to
your skin due to it's lactic acid, proteins, and Vitamins A, E and D which are
essential to healthy skin.  The milk proteins help to soothe
dry and damaged skin, minor sun burns, and soften rough skin.
Milk in a quality body lotion improves skin elasticity,  leaving it supple,
 healthy and radiant.  Antioxidant rich.

Here is a link to a tutorial and recipe to help you make your own
 quality milk lotion at home
by Susie from Our Simple Farm  (click link).

Susie's recipe is using goats milk, I made the same recipe with pasteurized cows milk,
and it came out gorgeous ! A real winning recipe !
Pictures below of my version of Susie's recipe. Click link above to get Susie's recipe, or comment below for help from me for formulating your own.

If making this, please take note of Susie's sterilization methods from her video.

Moisturizing Body Balm and Belly Balm Recipe

Updated 11/16/17                      Make our concentrated, super moisturizing,
                                           fast absorbing body balm.
Made with 3 natural butters and oil, with pure essential oil ...
a little goes a long way!
If you need some serious moisture, but hate the greasiness that usually accompanies the rich
butters and balms, this is the recipe for you.  This combination of 2 butters, 1 oil and optional
essential oil is highly concentrated, rich in natural skin loving moisture, healing
and best of all it literally melts on your skin.

Due to the incredible absorbing property of grapeseed oil, this balm seeps into your
skin quickly, taking the natural butters of shea and cocoa right along with it.

Recipe
3 oz        shea butter
1 1/2 oz  cocoa butter
1 1/2 oz  grapeseed oil
1- tsp     *orange essential oil, or eo of your choice. ( 1 tsp = 5ml or 100 drops)

                   * NOTE on essential oil usage in lotions and oils:
For adults:
Sensitive skin: .5 to 1 percent dilution = 3 to 6 drops per ounce of oil/butter
Normal, healthy skin: 1 to 2.5 percent dilution = 6 to 15 drops per ounce

Gently melt the cocoa butter with the grapeseed oil, by gently I mean don't over heat or boil, the least degree of heat used is best to preserve the oils properties. Use a double boiler or microwave. Stirring it will dissolve the cocoa butter quicker in the grapeseed.

When the cocoa butter is completely dissolved in the grapeseed, add your shea butter, you shouldn't need to  heat, just stir until completely dissolved.   If adding essential oil, put it in now and stir.

Place your bowl in the frig or freezer to cool oils to the point of getting thick. Then take out and with an electric wisk or hand blender beat the thickened oils.  It should get light and fluffy. You can use it light and fluffy, like a whipped body butter, or put it back in frig/freezer for a few more minutes, take it out and
beat it again.  As you beat it, you will see it become more the consistency of a balm. Very concentrated.

Place your body balm in clean containers and store in cool dark place.

This balm is excellent for dry feet, hands, elbows, legs, anywhere you need intensive moisture.  Great for eczema as well.

For a fabulous Belly Balm for pregnancy to aide in stretch marks and
dry itching from skin stretched tight, make this recipe without the essential oil, as some essential oils are
not recommended for use during pregnancy.

Photo is my attempt at showing you
how beautifully this balm melts!

Two butters, one oil and the finished product. That's all it takes to make your own, spa quality, natural body balm for yourself or a luxurious gift. Don't be intimidated, give it a try!  You can find shea and cocoa butter
on-line for sale and grapeseed is found in any grocery store and Walmart.
I would love to hear if anyone makes this recipe!
Enjoy,     Anna

Solid Lotion Bars

A bath and body must have: Solid Lotion Bar!
A solid at room temperature that melts on contact with your skin
 into a rich moisturizing lotion.

.
Made with a short ingredient list of the "who's who" of moisturizing natural butters and oils these
little gems come packed with a skin nourishing punch!  No water is used, so no preservatives are
needed.   Super long shelf life.     Convenient to use and carry.

You just pop your lotion bar out of its container, it is solid and smooth.  Turn it around in your hand like a bar of soap and your skin temperature begins to melt the lovely oils.  Silky and smooth, not greasy.

Smooth it on your legs after shaving, rub it into dry problem areas like your elbows and heels to restore, moisturize and heal.

I make mine with essential oils, high quality fragrance oils or leave unscented.  It's pure luxury, once you use a solid lotion bar you will never want to be without one.

RECIPE:
The recipe I like the best can be tweaked any way you like it to make the perfect bar for your skin.
Choose your oils and butters according to your preference of their properties.  If you are allergic to nuts don't use sweet almond oil, etc.

33%  Beeswax
33%  Natural butter.....cocoa butter, avocado butter, shea butter etc
33%  Natural oil..........sweet almond, grapeseed, coconut oil, olive, sunflower, etc
Essential oil, skin safe fragrance oil of choice.

I always put a bit of vitamin E in mine.
Keep in mind that heavy or greasy oils will make a greasy bar.

If you want a harder bar, use more beeswax or more cocoa butter, less sweet almond oil.

The range of play in this recipe by general consensus is:
25-33 %   Beeswax
67-75%    Base oils
Vit. E,  essential oil or fragrance
Just always make sure your recipe adds up to 100%.

If you don't want to make your own Solid Lotion Bar, you can
purchase one from Natures Home Spa

All Natural Chamomile Corn Flower-Tangerine homemade lotion recipe, non greasy.

Smooth, creamy, subtle, with fresh brewed chamomile corn flower tea and a touch of tangerine oil.
                                                      Lotion  Recipe

I wanted to make a softer, creamier lotion than my usual body butter recipe, (which I love) . The oils
you choose for your homemade lotions/butters make all the difference. Research your oils and choose according to the properties you want in your lotion.  Keeping the ratio at:  3/4 cup liquid oils and
1 cup distilled water and .5 oz (or 3TBL) beeswax

For this super creamy  rich lotion I used:

1/4 cup sweet almond oil
2/4 cup grapeseed oil, incorporated into this amount was 1 TBL olive oil and 1/2 tsp vitamin E
.5  oz of beeswax (or 3TBL)

1 cup steeped chamomile with corn flower tea  ( in distilled water)

The chamomile tea steeped to a strong brew and really scented this lotion. Smells really nice.
I put in a touch of tangerine essential oil to freshen it up, it complimented the tea, it lends a subtle
touch, quite nice.

Directions on "how to make" homemade lotion click my previous post HERE.

Please note:  there are no preservatives in this all natural recipe, anytime you use water in a homemade product you have potential for bacteria. If I were going to sell this I would add a preservative like Optiphen from Brambleberry  (is where I get it.)  For my personal home use I  make a batch size that I can use up in a month.     Don't dip wet or dirty hands into container.

Homemade Lotion Recipe for all skin types, babies too!

Peppermint Rose Lotion
Updated 9/23/16
I made this incredibly creamy lotion today with  dried peppermint leaves steeped in rosewater for the liquid, and beeswax for the emulsifier.   It is light and creamy, with the consistency of  a body butter.  The scent is subtle, floral, feminine, just lovely.
This can be made with simpler ingredients and it will turn out  great.   Good for all skin types,
even babies. Don't use any additives that you may be allergic to, of course!

You can make this all natural  recipe with distilled water in place of the rose water.
Easy to make in your own kitchen, this recipe makes 2 Cups of moisturizing, non greasy lotion.
 ___________________________________________________
1 cup distilled water

3/4 cup oil of your choice  (olive oil, grapeseed, almond,                                                              sunflower,  avocado....)
3 tbsp. beeswax  (or 1.5 oz)

Essential oil of your choice
____________________________________________________NOTE: This is intentionally a small batch as it has no preservative so that it can be used up in a few weeks.  Kept in the frig it will last longer.  You can make this in the blender or you can use a stick blender, I've done it both ways. Blender is messier.

Sterilize all your equipment in bleach water or spritz with alcohol before pouring lotion in it. This lotion does not have any preservative, so please be sterile.   Lotion can last appx. 3 months if properly sterilized, you can refrigerate it for longer shelf life. Add some vitamin E for skin benefits and boost longer shelf life.

HOW:
Melt the beeswax and  oil together in a microwave or double boiler.  It will be clear, no beeswax chips floating in it when it is done. Do not overheat in the microwave!
Allow to cool down a few minutes.

Warm your water. Put your water in the blender along with any essential oil if you are using any, turn blender on medium and slowly pour the melted oil/beeswax in thru the lid with the stopper removed.   It will turn white, your are making lotion! It is done when you no longer see any water on top.  If you still see water, turn up the blender and mix longer.  Lotion will thicken as it sits.
You will end up with a beautiful, creamy body butter.

With no preservative, any bath and body product with water in it is prone to bacteria if not used up in time, so......pamper yourself and use that beautiful lotion you just made!

I made this same lotion with Almond Biscotti, a paraben and phthlate free fragrance oil from
BrambleBerry.com

Thanks for stopping by,  Enjoy !

Homemade Body Butter, Lotion with beeswax, free recipe

                            Homemade Chamomile Body Butter

UPDATED NOTE 2/25/15:   Please take note that this body butter recipe does not list
a preservative. Any product with water in it is a potential breeding ground for bacteria,
with serious complications.  This recipe is not intended for resale products, but as a
way for you to make a homemade body butter without chemicals. Please follow
sterilization procedures if you try this awesome and fun project.
And remember to make an amount that can be used up within a couple weeks or please
add a preservative.

I was inspired by Louisa Shafia's post from lucidfood.com, to try my hand at homemade lotion.
This in itself is not a novel enterprise I know, but the fact that this lotion is made without any added stearic acid or emulsifying wax or preservative caught my eye.  Very easy, frugal to make this
gorgeous lotion at home.

Beeswax acts as an emulsifying (turning the oils and water into a combined product) agent.  No other emulsifier is needed.   It worked like a charm.  It came out the consistency of a beautiful body butter. Creamy, luxurious.  A very pleasing lotion with no chemicals or fillers.

My recipe is made with freshly brewed chamomile tea. The scent of the body butter is gorgeous. Not strong,  subtle and natural.  Very nice.  This recipe is SO creamy, absolutely lovely.  I've made this same recipe with plain, distilled water, with no tea, and added almond biscotti fragrance,  it was so warm and compfy, also made it with peppermint and loved it.  Just add your favorite essential oil and enjoy your own trademark lotion. If you make this with tea rather than distilled water it will have a shorter shelf life.

With no added preservative this will only keep a few weeks, longer if refrigerated.  I spritzed my containers with alcohol before filling them to get rid of any bacteria, and I used distilled water.  If I were going to sell this I would use a preservative in it, as any time you are dealing with water in a homemade natural product you are potentially dealing with bacteria and a preservative is a must. Optiphen is a good one, it is paraben, formaldahyde free.  Brambleberry sells it.

RECIPE:  Can be made in a blender or with a stick blender.  This recipe makes about 2 cups.

  • 1 cup tea made with distilled water  (or just water if you don't want tea)
  • 3/4 cup liquid oil: like almond, olive, grapeseed etc.  (I used 2/4 cup almond & 1/4 cup grapeseed oil)
  • 3 Tablespoons beeswax  (if using solid bar beeswax, grate it)
  • Optional :  Vit E for a longer shelf life: 1-2 capsules or 1 tsp
  • Optional: an essential oil for scent at your desired strength
1) Spritz all your utensils, blender, and lotion containers with alcohol.
2)  Make tea, or have distilled water ready if not using tea.
3)  Melt beeswax and oil together in microwave or double boiler. Allow to cool a few minutes.
4)  Pour tea or distilled water and essential oil (if using) into blender, or into bowl if using
    a stick blender.
5) Turn on blender, (medium) slowly pour in your oil/beeswax thru the stopper lid. It thickens
fast.  It's done when no more water is on top. If you still have water, turn up the speed of
     of the blender.
6) Scoop out and put in jars, keep uncovered until cool. Will thicken more as it cools.

Made with Almond biscotti scent, warm and yummy

Made with homemade rosewater and peppermint tea, fresh and natural

Made with Chamomile tea, subtle

Enjoy, ..................Anna
