How to Make a Matcha Tea face scrub, recipe

Matcha Tea Facial Cleansing Scrub Recipe
Matcha, superfood for the skin.
Matcha is a super fine ground green Japanese powdered tea.  In Japan, the bushes are shaded for about 20 days before the harvest. This reduced light forces the plant to make a higher concentration of chlorophyll, producing darker green leaves that are chopped, and ground into a fine powder.  Excellent for drinking and excellent for natural skin care.
It is the chlorophyll that makes matcha perfect to detox your skin! Antioxidant rich matcha cleanses the skin of toxins that age us prematurely.

Used topically, the high concentration of chlorophyll in Matcha makes it a
super food for the skin ...

* Optional: for a gentle exfoliation, grind up some chamomile

How to make a Solid Sugar Scrub, and creamy sugar scubs with Recipes

Sugar Scrub Skin Benefits and recipes

Sugar scrubs naturally exfoliate the skin. They remove dead, dull skin cells, revealing
new skin cells, giving you that natural healthy glow.  Once exfoliated, your skin can now
more efficiently absorb moisture allowing it to penetrate deeper. Skin is rejuvenated,
soft and supple.

Sugar is a natural humectant, meaning it draws moisture from the environment into your skin.
That's a good thing.

Sugar is a natural source of glycolic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid that encourages cell turnover.
Which means healthy, younger looking skin for you! It cleanses the skin and will not clog pores.

I use brown sugar for a face scrub, it's not as course as white granulated sugar.
I like white sugar for a body scrub.  I do not recommend using turbinado (raw sugar) in a scrub
used on the face or sensitive skin, it's course composition can leave microscopic tears on the skin..   Test for yourself on a small area of skin if in doubt. You can make a solid scrub or a creamy scrub.

RECIPE 1:           Simple 2 ingredient recipe for
                             SOLID SUGAR SCRUB

1)  3.5oz of unrefined cocoa butter. (if you use refined you lose the gorgeous scent & properties)
2)  2 1/4 Cups of white sugar

HOW to make:
Melt cocoa butter in microwave safe bowl or in double boiler.
Measure out your sugar (brown or white) in large bowl, pour melted butter over it and combine well.
Once combined, pack into your mold, I use the mini brownie mold sold at Hobby Lobby. This recipe will fill it one time. I toss an organic rose bud in the mold before filling for that pampering touch.

You can also use candy molds and small soap molds
 for your solid scrubs.
Don't want to make your scrubs yourself,
you can purchase them from me
in my shop, click HERE.

HOW TO USE:
Wet skin with warm water and gently rub solid sugar scrub over skin in a circular motion. Can also be used as a lip scrub.  Rinse and pat dry.

Can be used as a bath melt:  Drop into warm bath water and allow to melt.
Pick up scrub while in tub and gently rub over skin for a home spa treat!

How to make a Strawberry Facial Mask

Strawberry face masks are easy, inexpensive and highly effective natural skin care for your face.
Updated: 2/16/16

RECIPE:

2-3 strawberries
1 TBL warmed honey
1 TBL yogurt

This fresh strawberry mask contains a super-packed hydrating, nourishing punch for your skin.

The honey is a natural humectant, which means it draws moisture to the skin, hydrating and softening   it.  As well as providing nutrition, and anti-bacterial, anti-oxidant properties.

Strawberries are a natural alpha-hydroxy-acid (AHA) and rich in salicylic acid which sloughs off the dead, dry skin cells revealing healthy cells, as it tightens up pores and brightens your skin.
It is high in anti-oxidants as well ... think anti-aging!
It's salicylic acid is known to help clear acne and reduce oil, naturally.

Yogurt plays a calming roll in this recipe. Nourishing, healing, soothing.
It's lactic acid is a gentle exfoliater, helping to rid the skin of dead cells clogging pores.

Spread facial on your face with a soft cosmetic brush or your fingers. A nice thin layer will do.
It makes a lovely pink face mask! Leave on 5-10 minutes, until relatively dry. Rinse off.
NOTE:  I like to blend mine in a "Bullet" type small blender as it makes it foamier, and easier to apply and stay on the skin. Or, just mash with a fork.
For educational purposes only, not intended to treat, cure or diagnose....!

Enjoy !   Anna

How to make milk lotion.

Milk in lotion is naturally nourishing, moisturizing, and rejuvenating to
your skin due to it's lactic acid, proteins, and Vitamins A, E and D which are
essential to healthy skin.  The milk proteins help to soothe
dry and damaged skin, minor sun burns, and soften rough skin.
Milk in a quality body lotion improves skin elasticity,  leaving it supple,
 healthy and radiant.  Antioxidant rich.

Here is a link to a tutorial and recipe to help you make your own
 quality milk lotion at home
by Susie from Our Simple Farm  (click link).

Susie's recipe is using goats milk, I made the same recipe with pasteurized cows milk,
and it came out gorgeous ! A real winning recipe !
Pictures below of my version of Susie's recipe. Click link above to get Susie's recipe, or comment below for help from me for formulating your own.

Grapefruit and Sugar Facial

Bring summer indoors with the fresh citrus scent of grapefruit ! Cleansing, Toning, Moisturizing in an all- in- one recipe for a fresh face facial.
You can't help but feel uplifted with grapefruit's natural happy scent and glow it gives your face.

This recipe is almost too easy! We've been using it at my house all month and my teens are seeing a definite improvement in their skin.  My ( more mature ) skin feels SO soft and fresh after using
this simple, yet effective home facial.

Grapefruit is high in vitamin C which is essential in collagen production in the skin.

Sugar is a natural exfoliate that removes dirt and sebum from the skin, unclogging pores. Giving you a fresh faced glow by removing dead skin cells. Sugar is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) whose natural glycolic acid protects, moisturizes and helps to condition the skin.
I take a cup of sugar, put it in a clean plastic jar, then pour in grapeseed oil, gradually, a tablespoon at a time until you get the desired texture. Some folks like a lot of oil, some less. Your choice.

Then take the juice of 1/2 small grapefruit and begin to add it to your sugar mixture, stirring all the while, stop pouring when you get your desired texture. If too juicy, add more sugar.  You will see some sugar melting.  That's it.  Store covered in frig for a week.

I choose grapeseed oil for my facials because it is a light oil, and is not greasy. It absorbs quickly into your skin and does not clog pores. Easy to find in your grocery store oil aisle.
If you prefer a heavier oil try olive.

Yes, you can use grapefruit juice in place of fresh grapefruit, absolutely.

Don't scrub your face harshly with any facial scrub, just gently massage into your skin in circular movements, and rinse off with cool water, pat dry.

Fresh Papaya Face Masks

It's Papaya time! Summer and papaya just go together. The sweet scent, the bright color, shouts summer's natural goodness !

Papaya is popular in spas around the world and for good reason. Rich in vitamins C and E and
enzymes (papain and bromelain protein dissolving enzymes found naturally in papaya) that gently exfoliate and help smooth the skin, papaya is a first class natural facial ingredient.
Make your own mask at home and save money.  I've listed a few different ways you can use papaya in a natural face mask. My favorite is just plain papaya!

 How To:  Mask #1
You can make it simple by peeling, de-seeding and cutting up your fresh papaya, and putting it in your blender or food processor until a smooth, paste type consistency.
Apply to face and neck, leave on for 10 -15 mins. It dries fairly quick. Rinse first with warm water then finish with a refreshing cool splash.  You can use a soft wash cloth to take this off or just rinse.

Mask #2
Mix papaya in blender with warmed honey and oatmeal, leave on 10 -15 mins. Rinse.

Mask #3
Mash or blend ripened papaya.
Add  honey and yogurt to papaya. Blend well.
Options:
To lighten and brighten skin you can add some lemon juice. Though papaya itself is a natural lightener.
To calm, hydrate, nourish and refresh add homemade rosewater.

Morgan and her papaya love.

Milk Bath in a Bar, homemade milk soap

"Cleopatra's Milk Bath" soap:  Cleopatra had it right, milk is fabulous for the skin. Said to be born 69 years before Christ, in Egypt, she took the throne at the age of 18, and is to this day reknown for her beauty regime of milk baths.

The lactic acid in milk is an alpha hydroxy acid, (a natural acid that dissolves the glue that holds dead skin cells together, clogging our pores ).  It deeply and gently cleanses the skin. The dead, dry skin cells are sloughed off, stimulating the cell cycle and promoting new healthy skin cells and collogen.

Skin feels softer, conditioned and smoother after a milk treatment. I had to capture this in a soap bar.
Hence, "Cleopatra's Milk Bath", a milk bath in a bar.

I used goats milk, soy milk, cows milk and coconut water.

soy milk and beans

Enriched it, (if that's possible) with shea butter, cocoa butter, coconut oil,
grapeseed oil, sunflower oil, and a healthy dose of olive oil.
Hands down it is my creamiest, most luxurious feeling soap recipe to date.
I've made it scented with Almond Biscotti fragrance from Brmbleberry, truly decadent.
And, I've left it unscented, and natural, just lovely.
For my fellow Soapers: I superfatted it to 6%

Peaches and Cream Facial

Packed full of AHA's (alpha hydroxy acids), loaded with Vitamins A and C,  your skin will thrive with
the edition of this Peaches and Cream facial to your home spa recipes.

Rich in potassium and flavonoids (antioxidants) peaches can help retain skins elasticity,
tighten and brighten the skin, hydrate and help in cell renewal, as well as ease redness and aid in the
signs of early aging.   Antioxidants found naturally in fruit help to protect the skin from
UV rays that damage it with free radicals.

Our skin is able to absorb vitamins and nutrients that are applied topically in the form of  facial treatments
like this naturally made fresh fruit facial. Benefiting the general appearance of the skin,  this facial will leave you feeling fresh as a peach. No pun intended.

Now for the Cream part.....  combining peaches and cream is not a new beauty secret by any means.
Generations of women knew that the combination would leave their faces dewy fresh, thus the term "peaches
and cream complexion".

The addition of cream, yogurt, or sour cream, buttermilk, etc brings the soothing, healthy qualities of
lactic acid to your facial. Lactic acid, (another form of AHA's)  naturally found in milk gently cleanses as it loosens and lifts out dead skin cells that clogs the pores.  Dry skin is often dead skin cells that have built up on the surface of the skin, leaving it looking dull. Lactic acid in milk will aid in the removal of such, allowing
the skin to be able to absorb the moisture and nutrients it needs.   Milk has also been used for generations
as a skin lightener, or brightener, noticeably leaving the countenance with healthy vibrant glow.

RECIPE:     natural goodness, naturally exquisite!

Peaches
Choice of:  cream, yogurt, sour cream, buttermilk, kefir, milk.

Simply mash peaches as smooth as possible, add milk product a spoon at a time to desired consistency.   I prefer sour cream or yogurt as it adheres to the face better!   This mixture will be a bit runny with chunks in it.

Apply with fingertips or facial brush, allow to dry and rinse off. First with warm water, then a splash
of cool.

If acne or pimples are a concern, add a bit of lemon juice to your facial.

You will be astounded at how soft and smooth and fresh your face feels after this natural facial. I was.

Enjoy..............  Anna

Fresh Orange Sugar Scrub

updated: Aug.11 2016  Refreshing, Moisturizing, Softening ....Perfect skin pick-me-up!
This scrub can be used on both your body and face.
It will hydrate and exfoliate, allowing the much needed moisture
to absorb into your skin, leaving you feeling fresh, smooth and your skin glowing.

1)  Put desired amount of sugar, ( white or brown ) in a small bowl.

2) Add natural oil of choice: grapeseed absorbs well and is light,
olive oil is a bit heavier for extra moisturizing. Oils that are good for facials as they do not
clog pores are: sunflower, argan, and hemp. Apricot, sweet almond and Jojoba are great too.

3) Add the juice of a fresh squeezed orange

4) Add 1 Tbl honey (warmed so it will mix in well).  Stir all ingredients.

Your texture should be like applesauce:

You can make this in single use amounts for optimal yummy freshness, or a larger batch and keep it refrigerated.........I never make more than I can use up in a week.

Apply to your skin in circular motions, gently exfoliating. Rinse in warm water, then a splash of cold!
Pat dry.  You will LOVE the smooth, moisturized feel of your skin!

Enjoy......  Anna

Natural Beauty Tip for winter to Restore the Natural Ph to your face

The Milk Mask,  simple and natural beauty.

The natural ph balance of our skin is 5.5, which means it is slightly acidic.   "Ph" is referring to the balance of that acid and alkali on our skin.  Foods and things we put on our skin disrupts our natural ph balance, especially soaps.  Which is one good reason to use homemade soap and stay away from the drying agents of commercial soaps which remove the natural glycerin.

Want to put your winter skin back in balance?  Try a lovely homemade cultured milk mask.  Very simple to do:

RECIPE

Simply apply to your face SOUR CREAM, or BUTTERMILK, or my favorite Yogurt. If you are into
making that awesome power drink KEFIR, you can also use that. The cultured milk in these natural products will soften, and liven up your skin as it restores the natural Ph balance.

Apply a small amount of your choice of cultured milk and leave on for 10 minutes.  Then rinse well with warm water, finishing with a splash of cool water. Pat dry.   Lovely!

Enjoy natures goodness this winter!

Apple and Sugar Face and Body Scrub Recipe AHA rich.

Simply scrumptious Apple Face and Body Scrub spa quality.....so refreshing, softening, smoothing......
Now heres a recipe that is simple, affordable and absolutely fabulous. I kid you not. The apples in this face scrub are high in potassium, vitamins  A and C and malic acid which is a naturally exfoliating enzyme.  Malic acid (an AHA goodie for our skin) helps the skin look healthier, younger and firmer as it evens skin tone and tightens pores.  Cleansed of dead skin cells, soothed and smoothed your skin will glow with health.

Brown sugar or white sugar? Brown sugar for your face scrub as it is gentler , White sugar for body.

Sugar is full of glycolic acid which is an AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) and helps maintain healthy skin.
It cleanses really well and can reduce any body acne you may have and prevent further breakouts, as well as naturally moisturizing.

Cinnamon has antimicrobial benefits.    Just use a pinch.

Recipe courtesy of the Ritz Carlton's Bachelor Gulch Spa, via Webmd.com feature. Easy and lovely.

Recipe:

4 TBL brown sugar ( for face scrub)

 OR

2 TBL white sugar  and  2 TBL brown sugar ( for body scrub)

For face or body scrub you just mix the sugar with:

1 TBL apple sauce or fresh apple puree
pinch of cinnamon

How To Apply a Sugar Scrub to face:   Splash face with warm water, spoon out desired amount of freshly made apple/brown sugar scrub into your palm. Apply to face with fingers and massage in a circular motion for a few minutes.  Not alot of pressure is needed, keep it gentle. ( Keep out of eye area. ) Allow to stay on face for a few minutes after the massage, if you can, as this allows more penetration of the natural goodness!  Rinse with cool water.

Sugar Scrub for Body:  In the shower or tub,  start with warm water on skin, apply white sugar scrub in circular motions, rinse well.

Click here for more info about AHA's,  and for my  Apple facial recipe which is different than a scrub.

Apple scrubs and facials are a favorite around my house and with 3 daughters of varying ages
to try them out, they sure get high reviews around here!

DIY Christmas Bath and Body Gifts

 Bath Melt Recipe

I was inspired by Ksenija (Xenia) over at SenMi Natural Soap Works to try this beautifully simple Bath Melt recipe with only 3 ingredients and an essential oil of choice.    It turned out lovely.  It will make a nice Christmas gift on its own, but read on and you'll see how I paired it with a luxurious and easy Milk Bath, to make an exceptional homemade Bath Gift Set for Christmas.  Easy and affordable. Recipe made 5 melts, you can double of course.
NOTE: this recipe smells yummy but it is NOT for EATING, it is to be used in your bath water.

Recipe:
  • 100 grams baking soda (3.5 oz or almost 1 cup)
  • 50 grams cocoa butter (1.8 oz or almost 1/2 cup melted)
  • 1 Tablespoon milk powder, full fat is best not skim
  • 10 drops of Essential oil of your choice and strength
Her recipe was in Serbian so I did my best to Americanize it!  Basically,  you have a 2 to 1 ratio of baking soda to cocoa butter.

Melt cocoa butter in microwave.  Add baking soda after getting all lumps out.  Stir well.   Add milk powder after getting all lumps out, putting it thru a small strainer helps.  Stir well.  Add Essential oil and stir well.  Work quickly as it goes smoother into the mold if it has not cooled too much.  I used a mini muffin pan for my mold.  These bath melts should not be made large as it is too much oil for the soak.  Small is good.   Spoon into molds and top with dried rose petals, lavender or tea leaves.  Allow
to set up then put in frig for 15 minuets to harden.

Usage: One bath melt per bath. Hold your bath melt under the hot running water of your tub and it will melt slowly and disperse beautifully. Smells heavenly. Will be slippery.

Now for some fun...... I made a simple 3 ingredient milk bath and put it in a small muslin bag that I purchased at a local health food store for .19 cents and paired it with the Bath truffle for a nice gift......

Milk Bath Recipe

  • 1 cup corn starch
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 4 cups dried milk
  • 10 drops essential oil, your choice
This recipe makes 6 cups or 12 baths.
Mix dry ingredients in bowl, add E.O. of
your choice and strength, mix well.

Put 1/2 cup milk bath into
muslin bag, or glass jar for gift giving.

For the final product, I put the milk bath in a
cellophane bag and tied with raffia.

Usage:  1/2 cup milk bath and 1 bath melt
used together in 1 bath, or use separately.

Perfect for dry winter months, to pamper and keep
skin soft and moisturized. Product is not to be consumed, it is a natural ingredient bath product.

Enjoy,   Anna

DIY Rose Milk Bath

Rose petals, Milk, Rosewater..... luxury bath

A friend of mine and her daughter recently returned from a day spa in California.  While they had a great time just getting out together, they came home with their pocketbooks considerably lighter!   After hearing some of the pampering treatments at the spa, I set out to reproduce the same at home.  After all,
why not enjoy some of natures luxury in your own home!

The simple, but extremely luxurious rose milk bath!   I have to tell you, I was actually surprised at how refreshed I felt and how awesome my skin felt after this treatment.

     Recipe
Homemade rosewater (click  for rosewater tutorial)
Dry milk or regular milk (1-2 cups)
Rose petals

As your tub is filling with warm water simply pour in your rosewater, milk, and sprinkle petals on top. That's all it takes, simple and luxurious.   If you don't have any rosewater, try a milk bath, you will be amazed at how your skin feels, fill tub and pour in dry or liquid milk and enjoy.    Radiant and silky.  The moisturizing natural fats in milk are good for your skin and hair.  The lactic acid found in milk is a gentle exfoliat(leaving a new, soft layer of skin) as well as a soothing agent.

You can add oatmeal to your milk bath, oatmeal functions as a skin protectent, its properties protect the skin from irritants and soothes skin. Oatmeal will help to lock in moisture and soften your skin as well.    I grind my whole oats in my coffee bean grinder, instead of buying it from the drugstore,
Take your powdered oats and add them as the water flows from your faucet to ensure they mix well.

Enjoy,   Anna

How to make Rose Water

Want to make pure sunshine in a bowl?  Try your hand at a homemade rose water recipe.

........I  MADE  THIS
FROM THIS......
Why rose water, and what is it used for?    Rose water traditionally has been used in beauty treatments for literally thousands of years and for good reason. Ancient Greeks, Romans, and Phoenicians prized it, and it is said that Cleopatra used it to bathe her face.  Why?  It is a natural soother, calming is mild antiseptic that nourishes and hydrates the skin and face.   Rich in such vitamins as A,D,C,E and B3 it is an essential ingredient used for all skin types.  It helps reduce redness, inflammation, irritation and restore the skins natural ph balance gently. How?
Naturally it has the ability to stimulate the flow in the small, actually,  minute blood vessels that lie under the skin.  Scars, sunburn, and the natural aging of the skin all benefit from this process. It's soothing properties and  gentle fragrance make it a plus for the home remedy gal.     More.........

Uses:  Can be used as a toner, cleanser, and spritzer on its own, or combined with other ingredients to make a great mask or bath.

My rosewater spritzer. I love it.
My favorite use is simple, I put it in a small spray bottle and spritz it on my face to feel refreshed knowing it is acting as a hydrant and antibacterial keeping my face clean and clear.    I also use it on a cotton ball as a toner / cleanser before bed.  I spritz it on my teenagers faces as well, and they tell me it is helping their skin.

How to make Rosewater:  easy to make at home with fresh rose petals and water.  There are several methods,  I've tried the distilling method and the steeping method and prefer steeping. Its just flat easier, and I saw no difference in the rose waters, except perhaps some minute pieces of rose that I just strained out.  The outer, sometimes rougher, tougher looking petals of your roses should NOT be discarded as they contain the highest levels of beneficiary components.

Steeping Method:

Recipe:  One cup, packed, rose petals      2 cups boiling water    Steep 30 minutes    lasts 10 days in frig
Simply put petals and water in pot, boil, steep, strain.. Refrigerate.  Water takes on the color of your roses used.   Beautiful.

Distilling rose petals
Distilling Method:
You will need more rose petals for this method.

Using a large stainless steel kettle, place a brick on the bottom.  Surround the brick with your freshly picked rose petals. Fill with water to the top of the brick, not covering brick.   Place a bowl on top of the brick.   Invert lid to kettle and place on kettle.  Turn on your stoves burner and allow water to boil. As it boils and steam rises it hits your inverted lid and drips down into your bowl. That is why you must invert your lid, otherwise it drips right back into the boiling water/petals.   You can boil your water/petals until about half  or more of the water is gone.  The water you collected in the bowl is your fresh homemade rosewater.  Gorgeous.  Smells like a summer day.

Other Recipes:  Lemon Juice and Rose Water Face Mask: A good facial mask  for oily and acne-prone skin. Lemon juice is rich with Vitamin C to keep your skin looking fresh, toned and young. It also contains alpha hydroxy acid (AHA). See my post on AHA's.
  •  1-2  tablespoon of juice into a small bowl.
  • Add 1-2 tablespoon of rose water into  bowl. Mix them well. Apply to your face evenly and let it stay for 5-10 minutes. Rinse with cold water, then apply a face toner of rosewater.
  • variations:  add warmed honey or yogurt
Moisturizer:
I have not tried this recipe myself, so if you have please leave a comment about it below, thanks.

  • 50/50 mixure of rosewater and glycerin.  Glycerin can be found in your local pharmacy and is inexpensive, it is a natural moisturizer, colorless, odorless, humectant. Dissolves in water, alcohol. Great natural ingredient for your skin.
Homemade Soap and Lotions:  Rosewater is commonly used in soaps and lotions, as a gentle, natural ingredient with great skin enhancing benefits.  Simply replace the water used in your favorite homemade soap or lotion recipe with rosewater.  Soapers I've talked to replace 4oz regular water in their recipe for rosewater.  I am making it with all rosewater today and will post my results.

Bathe:  Add rose water and any extra petals to your warm bath  for a skin and spirit calming bath.  If you have any dried milk add it, and have a rose-milk bath.

Enjoy!
