How to Make a Matcha Tea face scrub, recipe

Matcha Tea Facial Cleansing Scrub Recipe
Matcha, superfood for the skin.
Matcha is a super fine ground green Japanese powdered tea.  In Japan, the bushes are shaded for about 20 days before the harvest. This reduced light forces the plant to make a higher concentration of chlorophyll, producing darker green leaves that are chopped, and ground into a fine powder.  Excellent for drinking and excellent for natural skin care.
It is the chlorophyll that makes matcha perfect to detox your skin! Antioxidant rich matcha cleanses the skin of toxins that age us prematurely.

Used topically, the high concentration of chlorophyll in Matcha makes it a
super food for the skin ...

* Optional: for a gentle exfoliation, grind up some chamomile
and add to your mask. Apply in a circular motion, this
stimulates blood flow and gives you a healthy glow.

DIY How to make a daily face cleanser

All natural facial cleanser, gentle enough for everyday!

This is so easy, you may be tempted to dismiss it, but .... trust me.... TRY THIS !

Base Recipe:
2 Tablespoons baking soda
1 Tablespoon water

Smooth over skin in a circular motion to remove dead, dry skin cells that dull your complexion, and clog pores. Rinse with warm water, splash with cool water, pat dry. Follow up with your favorite moisturizer or a few drops of natural oils (that's what I do) such as olive oil, sunflower oil, grapeseed oil, jojoba oil etc. I also use hyaluronnic acid.

Not everyone's skin is the same, if you experience irritation you just may need to add more water to your mix. It's important to moisturize after using this as well.

"WHA LAH!" or as the French say "Voila" which means "see there!"

.... this gentle exfoliating scrub reveals new skin cells, giving you a glowing, younger complexion.

Now for some fun...
To kick this up a notch, add some great natural ingredients from your pantry....
  • For an antioxidant punch add 1/2 teaspoon of powdered matcha tea

Blend matcha into baking soda and water.

Mix until you get this super creamy texture, doesn't take long.

TIP: I recommend following up with a natural moisturizer, or you can simply add some oil to your cleanser. Be sure and use an oil that won't clog pores such as :

  • argan
  • hemp
  • sunflower
  • sea buckthorn,
  • apricot
  • sweet almond
  • grapeseed
  • jojoba
  • peach kernal
  • tamanu
  • olive

Other great Ingredients you can add to personalize your daily cleanser:

  • a few drops of your favorite oil to moisturize
  • a few drops of lavender essential oil to soothe skin
  • a few drops of tea tree essential oil for troubled skin
  • colloidal oatmeal, or finely ground oatmeal to soothe
  • warmed honey, antioxidant rich, moisturizing, nourishing
  • powdered milk to soothe, nourish, gently exfoliate
  • vitamin E

Enjoy natural skin care you can make at home!

How to use rice in homemade soap. Natural beauty treatment with rice.

Rice has been known as a natural beauty treatment for centuries. Why not add it to your homemade soap? Incorporating rice into your soap is easy. There are several ways to do this. Here are two that I have incorporated into my soap recipes.

1) powdered, pencil line
    2) rice water as your liquid

Rice water is used as a gentle skin cleanser and toner as it contains vitamins and minerals that brighten, soften, tighten and shrink pores. Antioxidant rich to fight free radicals that damage skin and cause fine lines and wrinkles. Rich in vitamin E (think anti-aging).

How to make Rice Water:
Briefly rinse your rice in warm water to remove debris.
Cover rice with cool water and allow to soak for 10-15 minutes. Vitamins and minerals from the rice will seep into the water turning it into a lovely, milky, natural skin treatment. Use this rice water for the liquid in your soap recipe. You can also use this as a gentle cleanser/toner directly on your skin. Simply splash it on several times, rinse and pat dry.
For another way to use your rice try my  DIY rice mask recipe.

How to do a pencil line with rice in your homemade soap:
Grind your rice into a fine powder, you can use a coffee bean grinder, food processor or magic bullet type appliance.  Pour part of your soap batter into mold, sprinkle powdered rice in a thin layer over soap then gently pour or spoon the rest of your soap mixture over rice. I emphasize thin layer of rice, if you use too much rice your top layer will not adhere.

The rice line will show up as a cream colored line. As you lather up, the rice properties disperse in your suds, making a lovely homemade soap into a natural beauty soap.

Japanese Mochiko is a spa soap I created incorporating beautiful Jasmine rice flour.
Mochiko is Japanese for rice flower.

How to make a Strawberry Facial Mask

Strawberry face masks are easy, inexpensive and highly effective natural skin care for your face.
Updated: 2/16/16

RECIPE:

2-3 strawberries
1 TBL warmed honey
1 TBL yogurt

This fresh strawberry mask contains a super-packed hydrating, nourishing punch for your skin.

The honey is a natural humectant, which means it draws moisture to the skin, hydrating and softening   it.  As well as providing nutrition, and anti-bacterial, anti-oxidant properties.

Strawberries are a natural alpha-hydroxy-acid (AHA) and rich in salicylic acid which sloughs off the dead, dry skin cells revealing healthy cells, as it tightens up pores and brightens your skin.
It is high in anti-oxidants as well ... think anti-aging!
It's salicylic acid is known to help clear acne and reduce oil, naturally.

Yogurt plays a calming roll in this recipe. Nourishing, healing, soothing.
It's lactic acid is a gentle exfoliater, helping to rid the skin of dead cells clogging pores.

Spread facial on your face with a soft cosmetic brush or your fingers. A nice thin layer will do.
It makes a lovely pink face mask! Leave on 5-10 minutes, until relatively dry. Rinse off.
NOTE:  I like to blend mine in a "Bullet" type small blender as it makes it foamier, and easier to apply and stay on the skin. Or, just mash with a fork.
For educational purposes only, not intended to treat, cure or diagnose....!

Enjoy !   Anna

Lavender benefits and uses.

Lavender is used in many natural bath and body products, in different forms. It is highly prized in the natural beauty market. Here are just a few ways to use lavender in your natural beauty world.....

DRIED IN SACHETS:
As a relaxing herb, dried and placed in small pillows or sachets pinned to ones pillow, or sewn in a sleep mask it is said to promote sleep naturally, and aid in mild insomnia.

BATH BOMBS, BATH SALTS
Grind up the dried bud in a coffee bean grinder and add it to bath bombs and bath salts. It transforms the bath treat into a simply lovely, extraordinary luxury bath.  You can add lavender essential oil to the mixture as well to enhance the aroma. This is said to not only relax and promote good sleep, but aids in headache relief naturally.

1 to 2 cups of epsom salts for a standard sized tub,  and up to 10 drops of lavender essential oil in warm water bath is known to help with muscle aches, restlessness, and promote circulation as the magnesium (naturally occurring mineral in epsom salt) and lavender soak in.   Just so you know, epsom salt baths are not for everyone. Generally they are not recommended for people with heart problems, high blood pressure or diabetes, so always check with your Dr. if you have any health issues.

ANTI BACTERIAL properties of lavender make it a great addition to homemade soap recipes intended to aid in acne relief as it inhibits the bacteria on the surface of the skin.  You can also rub a drop of lavender essential oil on minor bug bites to disinfect, aid in itch relief and promote healing.
ANTI FUNGAL: For a foot soak to help in fungal relief such as athletes foot, add a few drops in warm soapy water.  For a refreshing, regenerating foot soak, add 1/2 cup epsom salt to warm water and lavender.

HEALING: The anti bacterial and anti fungal properties in lavender ward off infection and help reduce scarring and promote healing, so go ahead and use it on cuts, scrapes and insect bites.

FACIAL STEAM:  Do a natural beauty facial steam with lavender essential oil. Pour hot water in a bowl, add a few drops of lavender e.o. to water, drape a towel over your head to trap steamy-lavender mist on your face. Cleanses, promotes circulation, anti-bacterial help for acne.  I like to add green tea to a lavender facial.   More info on facial steaming and a green tea recipe.

SOLID LOTION BARS:
If you make solid lotion bars, try lavender essential oil in them. I keep one on my nightstand and use it before bed to help promote sleep.  The natural oils and butters in the solid lotion pair splendidly with the natural lavender oil to make a skin nourishing, health promoting lotion bar.

I bought my last lavender from a farm in Oregon where it is organically grown. It is by far the most fragrant variety I have used, and very affordably priced. I pinned it in a sachet to my pillow and just barely roll the buds around and the fragrance is intense!

If you'd like to purchase this same lavender click  HERE.

Natural facial care: Cleansing Grains

All natural Cleansing Grains are a way to naturally cleanse your face without harsh chemicals, and skin drying detergents. All natural goodness, simply applied, leaving you with glowing youthful skin.

Serving two purposes in one natural product, these hugely popular grains are becoming well known in the natural beauty world.   Not only can they be used as a lovely cleanser, but also as a
beautifying, de-tox face mask that does not strip natural oils.

The various grains, botanicals and oils used in each recipe allows for individual skin needs.

At Natures Home Spa we have found them to be an AMAZING product.   From problem skin to normal/combination skin to maturing skin, Cleansing Grains are a unique and extraordinary natural skin care product.  One step cleansing.  How easy is that.

First, the desired natural ingredients are gathered.  This can include botanicals such as rose petals, rose hips, lavender etc.  Clays can be added.  Grains like oats and gram flour are added along with skin nourishing oils like Tamanu, rose hip, carrot, sunflower, jojoba etc.  Ground almonds, etc.

This combination cleanses, exfoliates, and nourishes skin.

Why exfoliate?  Exfoliating helps the natural process of skin renewal as it removes the dead, dry skin cells, dirt, and oils that clog our pores, stimulating cell regeneration,  and increasing circulation. Skin is softer and smoother looking and feeling, as well as healthier, enabling it to perform it's duties in detoxing and protecting our face. Facial skin is now prepared to absorb and be nourished by the natural ingredients of the grains.

What exactly are Cleansing Grains then?  They are a unique recipe of collected natural ingredients ground together to create a lovely powdery-grainy product, that you hydrate with water and apply to your wet face.
You massage it in and rinse off as a cleanser,  or you leave it on for a few minutes  to dry, then
simply rinse off.

Skin is left cleansed, de-toxed, hydrated and most importantly not stripped of it's natural oils.

HOW TO HYDRATE and ACTIVATE GRAINS:
Simply use water or...
You can get creative and can hydrate your grains with milk, or fresh fruit like mashed banana, peaches, strawberries for your own individualized facial mask.  Cultured milks like yogurt, sour cream and buttermilk also make a nice hydrator.

HOW TO USE:
CLEANSER: You put a scant 1/4 tsp in the palm of your hand, add a few drops of warm water and mix in your palm. Apply to damp face. Massage in, rinse in warm water, ending with a splash of cool water.

MASK:  Use  1/4 - 1/2 tsp grains in palm or small ramekin sized bowl, mix with desired hydrator, (water, milk etc)  massage into skin, allow to dry, rinse off.

Natural grains, herbs, botanicals, and oils are a lovely way to cleanse, restore, heal, and keep your skin healthy An ounce  will cleanse your face 22 times to my count !   You will be astonished after one use,  your skin will feel soft, hydrated and healthy.

Enjoy,  Anna

Grapefruit and Sugar Facial

Bring summer indoors with the fresh citrus scent of grapefruit ! Cleansing, Toning, Moisturizing in an all- in- one recipe for a fresh face facial.
You can't help but feel uplifted with grapefruit's natural happy scent and glow it gives your face.

This recipe is almost too easy! We've been using it at my house all month and my teens are seeing a definite improvement in their skin.  My ( more mature ) skin feels SO soft and fresh after using
this simple, yet effective home facial.

Grapefruit is high in vitamin C which is essential in collagen production in the skin.

Sugar is a natural exfoliate that removes dirt and sebum from the skin, unclogging pores. Giving you a fresh faced glow by removing dead skin cells. Sugar is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) whose natural glycolic acid protects, moisturizes and helps to condition the skin.
I take a cup of sugar, put it in a clean plastic jar, then pour in grapeseed oil, gradually, a tablespoon at a time until you get the desired texture. Some folks like a lot of oil, some less. Your choice.

Then take the juice of 1/2 small grapefruit and begin to add it to your sugar mixture, stirring all the while, stop pouring when you get your desired texture. If too juicy, add more sugar.  You will see some sugar melting.  That's it.  Store covered in frig for a week.

I choose grapeseed oil for my facials because it is a light oil, and is not greasy. It absorbs quickly into your skin and does not clog pores. Easy to find in your grocery store oil aisle.
If you prefer a heavier oil try olive.

Yes, you can use grapefruit juice in place of fresh grapefruit, absolutely.

Don't scrub your face harshly with any facial scrub, just gently massage into your skin in circular movements, and rinse off with cool water, pat dry.

Fresh Papaya Face Masks

It's Papaya time! Summer and papaya just go together. The sweet scent, the bright color, shouts summer's natural goodness !

Papaya is popular in spas around the world and for good reason. Rich in vitamins C and E and
enzymes (papain and bromelain protein dissolving enzymes found naturally in papaya) that gently exfoliate and help smooth the skin, papaya is a first class natural facial ingredient.
Make your own mask at home and save money.  I've listed a few different ways you can use papaya in a natural face mask. My favorite is just plain papaya!

 How To:  Mask #1
You can make it simple by peeling, de-seeding and cutting up your fresh papaya, and putting it in your blender or food processor until a smooth, paste type consistency.
Apply to face and neck, leave on for 10 -15 mins. It dries fairly quick. Rinse first with warm water then finish with a refreshing cool splash.  You can use a soft wash cloth to take this off or just rinse.

Mask #2
Mix papaya in blender with warmed honey and oatmeal, leave on 10 -15 mins. Rinse.

Mask #3
Mash or blend ripened papaya.
Add  honey and yogurt to papaya. Blend well.
Options:
To lighten and brighten skin you can add some lemon juice. Though papaya itself is a natural lightener.
To calm, hydrate, nourish and refresh add homemade rosewater.

Morgan and her papaya love.

Aspirin Mask and blemish spot treatment recipe

A natural skin care remedy for clearer, healthier skin, right from your own "Pantry Spa".....
Aspirin, Lemon and Honey
As a facial mask, or spot treatment for acne and redness.
For informational purposes only, not intended to treat or diagnose medical conditions.
Updated: 2/16/16

A great natural skin care treatment to add to your routine. The aspirin mask is becoming quite popular now, but is not new to the skin care world.

Aspirin  ( acetylsalicylic acid) is a derivative of salicylic acid  It is anti-bacterial, anti-
                inflammatory,
( a beta hydroxayl acid ) it acts as a powerful exfoliant that sloughs off dead, dry
skin cells that clog pores, cleaning them and stimulating
collagen and new skin cell growth as well as healing blemishes.

Honey   is naturally anti-septic, anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and hydrating (a humectant),
killing bacteria, reducing swelling and moisturizing the skin.  No kidding.

Lemon   is optional in this recipe. It is also a salicylic acid, if you are having problems with
breakouts, blackheads etc, lemon juice will help unclog the pores which is the
main reason for breakouts. It's vitalmin C helps minimize sun damage also.

Water or Jojoba oil ( or other vegetable oil like grapeseed or olive ) Joboba is preferred
as it is closest to the skins natural sebum, but it is pricey.

RECIPE:   Can be used as an all over mask or as a spot treatment for blemishes.  I personally have never used this as a full facial mask only as a spot treatment, so I  will only
be sharing the spot treatment recipe.  I only share recipes that I have personally used and tested at Natures Home Spa.

FOR SPOT TREATMENT:
First warm up honey, just a small amount.

Use uncoated aspirins, but if you have the coated variety just
hold them under warm water and rub
between your fingers until the coating wears off,  you can tell when this happens as the aspirin feels gritty and will dissolve quickly in your hand.

Add aspirin to your honey. Add a drop or two of lemon juice, this is optional.  Stir well.

Apply to troubled spots on your face. Acne, pimples, white spots from ingrown hairs,  blackheads. Leave on for 10 minutes, rinse.

Do not use the aspirin mask if you are allergic to aspirin,
or if you can not take aspirin for any other reasons.
Aspirin is not suitable for children under 12 or pregnant women.

Peaches and Cream Facial

Packed full of AHA's (alpha hydroxy acids), loaded with Vitamins A and C,  your skin will thrive with
the edition of this Peaches and Cream facial to your home spa recipes.

Rich in potassium and flavonoids (antioxidants) peaches can help retain skins elasticity,
tighten and brighten the skin, hydrate and help in cell renewal, as well as ease redness and aid in the
signs of early aging.   Antioxidants found naturally in fruit help to protect the skin from
UV rays that damage it with free radicals.

Our skin is able to absorb vitamins and nutrients that are applied topically in the form of  facial treatments
like this naturally made fresh fruit facial. Benefiting the general appearance of the skin,  this facial will leave you feeling fresh as a peach. No pun intended.

Now for the Cream part.....  combining peaches and cream is not a new beauty secret by any means.
Generations of women knew that the combination would leave their faces dewy fresh, thus the term "peaches
and cream complexion".

The addition of cream, yogurt, or sour cream, buttermilk, etc brings the soothing, healthy qualities of
lactic acid to your facial. Lactic acid, (another form of AHA's)  naturally found in milk gently cleanses as it loosens and lifts out dead skin cells that clogs the pores.  Dry skin is often dead skin cells that have built up on the surface of the skin, leaving it looking dull. Lactic acid in milk will aid in the removal of such, allowing
the skin to be able to absorb the moisture and nutrients it needs.   Milk has also been used for generations
as a skin lightener, or brightener, noticeably leaving the countenance with healthy vibrant glow.

RECIPE:     natural goodness, naturally exquisite!

Peaches
Choice of:  cream, yogurt, sour cream, buttermilk, kefir, milk.

Simply mash peaches as smooth as possible, add milk product a spoon at a time to desired consistency.   I prefer sour cream or yogurt as it adheres to the face better!   This mixture will be a bit runny with chunks in it.

Apply with fingertips or facial brush, allow to dry and rinse off. First with warm water, then a splash
of cool.

If acne or pimples are a concern, add a bit of lemon juice to your facial.

You will be astounded at how soft and smooth and fresh your face feels after this natural facial. I was.

Enjoy..............  Anna

Fresh Orange Sugar Scrub

updated: Aug.11 2016  Refreshing, Moisturizing, Softening ....Perfect skin pick-me-up!
This scrub can be used on both your body and face.
It will hydrate and exfoliate, allowing the much needed moisture
to absorb into your skin, leaving you feeling fresh, smooth and your skin glowing.

1)  Put desired amount of sugar, ( white or brown ) in a small bowl.

2) Add natural oil of choice: grapeseed absorbs well and is light,
olive oil is a bit heavier for extra moisturizing. Oils that are good for facials as they do not
clog pores are: sunflower, argan, and hemp. Apricot, sweet almond and Jojoba are great too.

3) Add the juice of a fresh squeezed orange

4) Add 1 Tbl honey (warmed so it will mix in well).  Stir all ingredients.

Your texture should be like applesauce:

You can make this in single use amounts for optimal yummy freshness, or a larger batch and keep it refrigerated.........I never make more than I can use up in a week.

Apply to your skin in circular motions, gently exfoliating. Rinse in warm water, then a splash of cold!
Pat dry.  You will LOVE the smooth, moisturized feel of your skin!

Enjoy......  Anna

Natural Beauty Tip for winter to Restore the Natural Ph to your face

The Milk Mask,  simple and natural beauty.

The natural ph balance of our skin is 5.5, which means it is slightly acidic.   "Ph" is referring to the balance of that acid and alkali on our skin.  Foods and things we put on our skin disrupts our natural ph balance, especially soaps.  Which is one good reason to use homemade soap and stay away from the drying agents of commercial soaps which remove the natural glycerin.

Want to put your winter skin back in balance?  Try a lovely homemade cultured milk mask.  Very simple to do:

RECIPE

Simply apply to your face SOUR CREAM, or BUTTERMILK, or my favorite Yogurt. If you are into
making that awesome power drink KEFIR, you can also use that. The cultured milk in these natural products will soften, and liven up your skin as it restores the natural Ph balance.

Apply a small amount of your choice of cultured milk and leave on for 10 minutes.  Then rinse well with warm water, finishing with a splash of cool water. Pat dry.   Lovely!

Enjoy natures goodness this winter!

Apple and Sugar Face and Body Scrub Recipe AHA rich.

Simply scrumptious Apple Face and Body Scrub spa quality.....so refreshing, softening, smoothing......
Now heres a recipe that is simple, affordable and absolutely fabulous. I kid you not. The apples in this face scrub are high in potassium, vitamins  A and C and malic acid which is a naturally exfoliating enzyme.  Malic acid (an AHA goodie for our skin) helps the skin look healthier, younger and firmer as it evens skin tone and tightens pores.  Cleansed of dead skin cells, soothed and smoothed your skin will glow with health.

Brown sugar or white sugar? Brown sugar for your face scrub as it is gentler , White sugar for body.

Sugar is full of glycolic acid which is an AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) and helps maintain healthy skin.
It cleanses really well and can reduce any body acne you may have and prevent further breakouts, as well as naturally moisturizing.

Cinnamon has antimicrobial benefits.    Just use a pinch.

Recipe courtesy of the Ritz Carlton's Bachelor Gulch Spa, via Webmd.com feature. Easy and lovely.

Recipe:

4 TBL brown sugar ( for face scrub)

 OR

2 TBL white sugar  and  2 TBL brown sugar ( for body scrub)

For face or body scrub you just mix the sugar with:

1 TBL apple sauce or fresh apple puree
pinch of cinnamon

How To Apply a Sugar Scrub to face:   Splash face with warm water, spoon out desired amount of freshly made apple/brown sugar scrub into your palm. Apply to face with fingers and massage in a circular motion for a few minutes.  Not alot of pressure is needed, keep it gentle. ( Keep out of eye area. ) Allow to stay on face for a few minutes after the massage, if you can, as this allows more penetration of the natural goodness!  Rinse with cool water.

Sugar Scrub for Body:  In the shower or tub,  start with warm water on skin, apply white sugar scrub in circular motions, rinse well.

Click here for more info about AHA's,  and for my  Apple facial recipe which is different than a scrub.

Apple scrubs and facials are a favorite around my house and with 3 daughters of varying ages
to try them out, they sure get high reviews around here!
