How to make a Solid Sugar Scrub, and creamy sugar scubs with Recipes

Sugar Scrub Skin Benefits and recipes

Sugar scrubs naturally exfoliate the skin. They remove dead, dull skin cells, revealing
new skin cells, giving you that natural healthy glow.  Once exfoliated, your skin can now
more efficiently absorb moisture allowing it to penetrate deeper. Skin is rejuvenated,
soft and supple.

Sugar is a natural humectant, meaning it draws moisture from the environment into your skin.
That's a good thing.

Sugar is a natural source of glycolic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid that encourages cell turnover.
Which means healthy, younger looking skin for you! It cleanses the skin and will not clog pores.

I use brown sugar for a face scrub, it's not as course as white granulated sugar.
I like white sugar for a body scrub.  I do not recommend using turbinado (raw sugar) in a scrub
used on the face or sensitive skin, it's course composition can leave microscopic tears on the skin..   Test for yourself on a small area of skin if in doubt. You can make a solid scrub or a creamy scrub.

RECIPE 1:           Simple 2 ingredient recipe for
                             SOLID SUGAR SCRUB

1)  3.5oz of unrefined cocoa butter. (if you use refined you lose the gorgeous scent & properties)
2)  2 1/4 Cups of white sugar

HOW to make:
Melt cocoa butter in microwave safe bowl or in double boiler.
Measure out your sugar (brown or white) in large bowl, pour melted butter over it and combine well.
Once combined, pack into your mold, I use the mini brownie mold sold at Hobby Lobby. This recipe will fill it one time. I toss an organic rose bud in the mold before filling for that pampering touch.

You can also use candy molds and small soap molds
 for your solid scrubs.
Don't want to make your scrubs yourself,
you can purchase them from me
in my shop, click HERE.

HOW TO USE:
Wet skin with warm water and gently rub solid sugar scrub over skin in a circular motion. Can also be used as a lip scrub.  Rinse and pat dry.

Can be used as a bath melt:  Drop into warm bath water and allow to melt.
Pick up scrub while in tub and gently rub over skin for a home spa treat!

Fresh Unbrewed Coffee Scrub by Guest Blogger Roselynn Lee

Special Guest Blogger Roselynn Lee has agreed to share one of her island recipes with Natures Home Spa readers today. I call it her island recipe because Roselynn IS an island girl.
Coming from the beautiful Tonga Islands,  Roselynn has the
gorgeous natural skin tone of an island girl, heres our chance to see how these lovelies
keep that healthy natural glow!

Rise and Shine Coffee Sugar Scrub

Well, thanks Anna for allowing me to partake  in this awesome blog.
Being inspired by Anna, I decided to make a coffee scrub.
I have lots of it and its cheap. Plus, I love the smell of coffee.  As I started researching
coffee I was amazed that it did more than pick you up in the morning!

I started out with the basic:

1/2 cup fresh coffee grounds ( not brewed )
1/2 cup sugar
few grinds of sea salt
1 Tablespoon honey
1 Tablespoon olive oil
1/2 cup coconut oil

Let's talk about our main ingredient and how it can make a powerful impact on your skin and health.

Coffee is great smelling and relaxes the brain.  It clears ones thoughts out of their head, an anti-depressant, and it helps prevent nausea.  The coffee helps fatigue after exercise.  So, that's why I don't brew the coffee.  I want to take advantage of that strong coffee aroma and the caffeic acid that adds all these positive side effects.  So add freshly grounded as possible.

A study showed that caffeic acid found in coffee grounds can significantly affect anti-inflammatory activity and skin wound healing.  So, since we are talking about wound healing, lets talk cellulite!  HAHAHAHA!
Yes, ladies, lets call it a wound since it hurts to see it !  Because of the salts, sugars, and the coffee's rough texture it exfoliates all the dead skin and it helps aid in massaging the body  It increases blood flow, pushing toxins out of the fatty cells, decreasing the appearance of cellulite.  Plus, with all the dead skin gone, you are glowing!  Get this, the coffee gives a hint of brown to your skin when you rub it on.  The olive oil, honey and the coconut oil will leave you smelling like a warm Polynesian night during harvest.

The main natural chemical in coffee is caffeine, a natural antioxidant. Antioxidants have many benefits, including heart disease and cancer fighting properties.  Antioxidants also neutralize the effects of free radicals, which can damage the inner layer of skin.  This damage is often reflected in age spots and wrinkles.  When a coffee body scrub is applied, the skin absorbs this antioxidant and can help prevent premature aging.  Caffeine is a vasodilator, which means it constricts blood vessels in the skin.  This action works to make blood vessels tighter and firmer very quickly, which is reflected in your skin texture.  So, you can say bye-bye to those varicose veins.

So, let me give you my shower experience.  As I applied the scrub to my body, the aroma overwhelmed me and I was relaxed.  The texture was so pleasant, and rough enough to be gentle at the same time.  I applied it so thoughtlessly.  Instantly I can see the water repelling against my skin because the coconut oil was sealing my skin to lock in moisture from the olive oil, and shined because of the golden honey.  My skin was SO indulged by this compound that I didn't even need a lather while shaving my legs.  By my surprise, while I was shaving,  I was shaving more dead skin off my legs after I tapped the shave stick. I figured, lets go to town!

My skin looked great.  I smelled great,  and the coffee did it's job.  Plus, you just rubbed caffeine into your body, so you can literally jump into action and start your day!

Fresh Orange Sugar Scrub

updated: Aug.11 2016  Refreshing, Moisturizing, Softening ....Perfect skin pick-me-up!
This scrub can be used on both your body and face.
It will hydrate and exfoliate, allowing the much needed moisture
to absorb into your skin, leaving you feeling fresh, smooth and your skin glowing.

1)  Put desired amount of sugar, ( white or brown ) in a small bowl.

2) Add natural oil of choice: grapeseed absorbs well and is light,
olive oil is a bit heavier for extra moisturizing. Oils that are good for facials as they do not
clog pores are: sunflower, argan, and hemp. Apricot, sweet almond and Jojoba are great too.

3) Add the juice of a fresh squeezed orange

4) Add 1 Tbl honey (warmed so it will mix in well).  Stir all ingredients.

Your texture should be like applesauce:

You can make this in single use amounts for optimal yummy freshness, or a larger batch and keep it refrigerated.........I never make more than I can use up in a week.

Apply to your skin in circular motions, gently exfoliating. Rinse in warm water, then a splash of cold!
Pat dry.  You will LOVE the smooth, moisturized feel of your skin!

Enjoy......  Anna

Spiced Coffee Sugar Scrub Recipe

How about a nice spiced coffee sugar scrub to moisturize and liven
up our winter dry skin....smells divine!

Winter definitely has its drying effect on our skin. How about a yummy, toasty coffee sugar scrub scented with the warm essence of ginger and cinnamon!

Ginger, a native plant of  Asia, does have some skin benefits.  As a natural antioxidant it fights skin damaging free radicals, and is said to promote an eveness to skin tone and lighten age spots. Which is why I intend on using this scrub on my hands.  It is also used in cellulite reducing formulas because it improves circulation, which is why I coupled it with coffee as a scrub to use on legs!

Once you do a nice sugar scrub on your skin, and the old dry skin sloughs off,  your oil can get down in there where it needs to be, leaving your skin feeling soft, supple and moisturized.  Just what you need to fight the winter dry blues!

This recipe makes about enough for one full body use.   Use spices and Oil at your own rate to truly make this your special scrub! (Keeping in mind that too much cinnamon is drying)  Some like their scrubs liquid, some like it dryer.  I make mine with 2 TBL  grapeseed oil in this recipe as I prefer a lighter oil.  You can use olive oil for a heavier scrub or mix the oils, or melted coconut oil, sweet almond oil,......your choice!

Enjoy,  Anna

Homemade Coffee Scrub Recipe

This skin softening, invigorating, natural treatment is used in spas around the world...
and in our own  Home Spa's for pennies!

Coffee, America's great morning picker-upper is a great exfoliator too!   And the perfect
addition to your home-spa pantry. Use your favorite coffee in a fragrant, pampering body scrub.
Want to be resourceful?  *Save your morning grounds and mix them into a scrub to be used the
same day.

Why coffee?   Coffee grounds are a natural exfoliator. Exfoliation is the removal of dead, dry skin cells that collect on the outer surface of the skin. The coffee buffs these unwanted cells off and speeds up our own skins natural renewal process, producing healthy glowing skin.   Also, coffee's natural caffein content is used as a topical treatment for cellulite, as it dilates blood vessels which increases speed and volume of blood flow.  Which, in theory, helps remove excess water from our tissue, thus improving the skins appearance and tone, according to the University of Sao Paulo 2008 study.   (ok girls, we all know we cannot fully get rid of our cellulite, but we can reduce the appearance of it , weight loss is also key).

Note: We are talking about a body scrub here, not a facial scrub.  Facial scrubs are composed more gentle than body scrubs.

Ever wonder why you have alligator skin legs even after using quality lotion?  Its time to exfoliate.

When you exfoliate your legs, for example, you unclog the pores, allowing your skin to absorb the necessary moisture it needs. The healthy benefits in your quality lotion can now actually get to their destination in your dry legs. ( feet, heels etc ). Dull skin comes alive, leaving you with a natural glow
and beautiful soft skin.
How: Apply this in the shower, it will be slippery, or sitting on tub side.  Take a  palm full of scrub and apply in a circular motion, paying attention to cellulite areas, small varicose vein areas, and dry skin areas.

RECIPE for one use:   Basic Coffee Scrub
  • 3 TBL coffee grounds;   Use new grounds for the greatest application of caffein.
  • 1 TBL natural oil of your choice:  like olive oil, grapeseed, coconut (melted), almond etc.. Don't use any petroleum based oil as this will clog pores!  Olive has a heavier feel, is naturally hypoallergenic and is full of vitamin A and E , helps repair skin....grapeseed oil is lighter in feel, silky, not oily, and penetrates the skin quickly. It is cheaper than olive oil and is easily found in the grocery store with the other oils. This is a great choice for scrubs as it has almost no scent and is good for sensitive skin. Great for cooking too.
  • 1 TBL sugar:  white or brown or a mixture of both.
  • Mix all dry ingredients, then add oil (s).  Oil amount is your preference based on how much coffee grounds you are using.  Make this in single use amounts, or make a larger batch and store in frig if you used wet grounds. Final scrub consistency is your perogative, some like more oil than others, some like it dryer. Experiment. There's no wrong or right.

RECIPE:   Mocha Spice
  • 1 TBL Cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • Add to the basic coffee scrub recipe above,s dry ingredients, then add oil (s)
  • optional :  vanilla

NOTE:  Don't exfoliate skin with rashes or abrasions

*NOTE: I recommend using fresh coffee grounds as the caffeine content is not depleted. However, if               you use, used grounds for your scrub, dry them out first, you don't want
to introduce water into your scrub, it breeds bacteria. You can use your wet
grounds if you make a one time use scrub and use it that same day.
